Helping New Users Discover Product Value
Beautiful.ai's editor is powerful, but many new trial users abandoned the product before discovering the features that made it valuable. I led the design of the editor onboarding experience, creating an in-product quick start guide that educated users, encouraged early activation, and increased trial-to-paid conversion.
Overview
Helping users reach value before their trial ends
Beautiful.ai offers dozens of powerful capabilities, but first-time users often entered the editor without understanding what made the product different from traditional presentation tools. Rather than overwhelming users with tutorials or documentation, we wanted to teach key concepts directly inside the product as they were exploring.
I led the end-to-end design of a guided onboarding experience that introduced the editor's most valuable features through contextual education and lightweight product guidance. The goal wasn't simply to help users complete tasks—it was to help them understand why Beautiful.ai was different and experience those moments of value early in their trial.
The experience increased trial-to-paid conversion from 12.2% to 18.8% for users who engaged with the onboarding checklist—a 54% relative lift. Users who completed more checklist items converted at even higher rates, reaching nearly 22%, while those who watched the complete Smart Slides introduction video stayed engaged substantially longer before canceling. The results reinforced that helping users discover the product's core value was one of the strongest predictors of conversion.
Problem
New users weren't discovering the features that drove conversion
Many trial users entered the editor, created a few slides, and left before experiencing the capabilities that differentiated Beautiful.ai. Features like Smart Slides, themes, animations, and quick-add workflows were often hidden behind unfamiliar UI or concepts that users didn't naturally discover on their own.
The challenge wasn't usability alone, it was helping users build the right mental model of how the product worked before their 14-day trial ended.
Our goals were to:
Increase education and early activation
Reinforce Smart Slides as the core product mental model
Surface theme customization and branding capabilities
Demonstrate the impact of themes across an entire presentation
Encourage exploration of automation features like layouts, animations, and quick-add workflows
Research
Understanding where users dropped off—and what they never discovered.
We combined product analytics, funnel analysis, session recordings, and user feedback to understand where new users struggled during onboarding.
The research revealed a consistent pattern:
Users frequently created presentations without interacting with Smart Slides.
Many never opened theme customization, despite it being one of the product's strongest differentiators.
Valuable automation features remained undiscovered because users didn't know where to look.
Users who explored more editor functionality converted to paid subscriptions at significantly higher rates.
Rather than adding more onboarding outside the product, we identified an opportunity to teach users while they were actively building presentations.
Ideation
Teaching users through exploration instead of interruption.
I explored several onboarding approaches, including modal walkthroughs, interactive tutorials, and finally checklist-driven experiences.
The team ultimately aligned around a lightweight Quick Start Guide that lived inside the editor. Instead of forcing users through a rigid sequence, it encouraged exploration while allowing users to learn at their own pace.
Each checklist item introduced a meaningful capability:
Watch a short Smart Slides overview video (created in partnership with Marketing)
Add a Smart Slide
Explore the Smart Slide panel
Personalize presentation themes
Present and share the finished presentation
To keep users oriented inside a complex interface, hovering over each checklist item highlighted the relevant area of the editor, while selecting it opened contextual coachmarks with concise guidance and supporting visuals.
This approach reduced cognitive load while helping users connect each feature to the workflow they were already completing.
Designs
Bringing product education directly into the editor
The final experience combined a persistent onboarding checklist with contextual guidance that introduced users to the product's most valuable capabilities without interrupting creation.
The experience included:
A Quick Start Guide embedded within the editor
Interactive hover states that pointed users to relevant UI locations
Coachmarks with gifs, concise explanations, and contextual guidance
A short Smart Slides educational video embedded directly into onboarding
Progressive education that encouraged exploration while allowing users to complete tasks in any order
Rather than explaining every feature upfront, the onboarding experience introduced concepts exactly when users were ready to use them, helping them build confidence while reinforcing Beautiful.ai's core value proposition.
Lessons
Activation isn't about finishing onboarding—it's about discovering value.
This project reinforced that successful onboarding is less about checking off steps and more about helping users experience meaningful product moments as quickly as possible.
A few takeaways stood out:
Education is most effective when delivered in context rather than through lengthy tutorials.
Helping users understand the product's mental model is just as important as teaching individual features.
Small moments of guidance can dramatically improve discovery without disrupting exploration.
Measuring feature adoption alongside business metrics like trial conversion provided a clearer picture of onboarding success.
This project also strengthened my approach to growth design—combining user behavior, experimentation, and product education to improve both the user experience and measurable business outcomes.
